Historical Background:
During the 1960's God laid a burden on some born-again Garo young people to reach their own Garo Community with the glorious message of Salvation in Jesus Christ by faith alone. These young people began to humble themselves before God, pray and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Many prayed in tears. Some fasted and prayed. A few people prayed over the map of the Garo villages of Meghalaya and Assam.
God honoured their prayers. By God's grace an evangelical witness spread over some Garo villages and towns. Since the believers were scattered, those with evangelical faith felt the need to be organised and brought together. On 26th December 1986, a handful of evangelical Garos gathered at Resu Belpara, East Garo Hills.
After much prayer and consultation the idea of an Interdenominational and non-interdenominational evangelical association called "Garo Evangelical Alliance" was presented. However, due to the lack of a proper constitution and also sufficient time, the members decided to wait one more year for prayer and consideration.
The next year, the general meeting of the concerned evangelical leaders was convened at Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya. All the members present felt that this "vision" and prompting was from the Lord of the Harvest. They resolved to form an association called "A·CHIK EVANGELICAL ASSOCIATION". That was on 29th December 1987. The aims and objectives of the association were spelt out. After having the proper constitution framed and passed in the Govt. of Meghalaya under the Registration of Societies Acts XXI, 1983. Thus the A·chik Evangelical Association was born.
